HPCC 601: Group Dynamics and Counseling (Winter 2024-2025)

Position Summary:

The Department of Psychology at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, Illinois is seeking to fill part-time lecturer positions for three graduate-level courses during the Summer 2024, Fall 2024 and Winter 2024-2025 quarters, as indicated above. Summer quarter runs from 5/28/24 - 8/2/24. Fall quarter runs from 8/12/2024 – 11/1/2024. Winter quarter runs from 11/11/2024- 2/14/2025, with a two week break at the end of December. The summer course meets for 2 hours per week on campus; the fall and winter courses meet 4.5 hours per week on campus. Upon approval from the Department Chair, a small portion of the course time may be delivered via asynchronous assignments. We are willing to consider a single applicant for all courses or different applicants for each course.

Brief course descriptions are provided below:

  • HPSC-605 Special Topics in Psychology (2 QH). This elective course will examine emerging treatments in mental health such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, rapid acting therapies (e.g., ketamine) and psychedelics, as well as non-traditional therapies (e.g., dance therapy, music therapy). The course will focus on the evidence for these treatments to alleviate a variety of mental health diagnoses.

  • HPSC 577 Socio and Cultural Foundations of Behavior (4.5 QH) Using a systems approach, this course will examine the impact of privilege on students’ perception of culture, diversity, and identity. Students will explore their own culture, and their reactions to and perception of persons who are different. The course specifically examines class, ableness, gender roles, ethnicity and sexual orientation, and the interaction between those statuses and clinical issues. Strong emphasis will be placed on the constructions, meaning and experiences of difference in an effort to prepare students to function as culturally responsive, ethical psychologists, plus some social foundations of behavior curriculum.

  • HPCC 601 Group Dynamics and Counseling (4.5 QH) This course reviews the primary theoretical approaches to group therapy/counseling. Students will learn when to apply different group therapy techniques and how to address individual differences within the group therapy context.

Part-time lecturer faculty have access to Departmental and University resources such as secretarial support, a university email account, and library access. Candidates who identify as Latinx or African-American, and/or have experience working with Latinx and/or African American populations and those who can add new and valuable perspectives to the academic environment are desirable. All qualified applicants for the summer course must apply by 4/22/24 to receive full consideration of their application, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender orientation, national origin, age, protected veteran status, or status as an individual with disability. All qualified applicants who apply by 6/15/2024 will receive consideration for the Fall and Winter courses regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender orientation, national origin, age, protected veteran status, or status as an individual with disability.
