Summary of Work

The individual in this position is responsible for conducting criminal investigations utilizing digital forensics and supporting all law enforcement in North Dakota. Capabilities include, but are not limited to, computer examinations, cellular phone examinations, decryption, bypassing passwords, advanced board repair, data recovery, on-scene triage and vehicle forensics. This individual will also be responsible for serving on a statewide task force and providing law enforcement training to officers throughout the state. There are two positions available, and they will be located in Grand Forks, ND.

In addition to the monthly salary, this position includes fully paid health insurance for employee and family, the option to participate in employee-paid dental and vision for employee and family, participation in the state NDPERS defined contribution retirement plan as well as the option to participate in the 457 deferred compensation plan, the option to contribute to a medical spending account, and earning annual and sick leave.

Employees in this position are eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

Duties and Tasks

  • Participate in supervised basic investigations such as burglary, forgery, possession of controlled substance, larceny/theft, assault, gaming, motor vehicle thefts, stolen property, and other assigned investigations.
  • Maintain proficiency in use of specialized technical equipment.
  • Complete other duties associated with search warrants, preservation of evidence, and case preparation, to include providing sworn testimony.
  • Conduct illegal drug investigations and work in an undercover role.
  • Apprehend and convict suspects who are responsible for the crime.
  • Obtain and exchange intelligence information.
  • Conduct surveillance activities.
  • Prepare and present case reports.
  • Develop and maintain associations with confidential informants.
  • Coordinate arrest and search warrant activities.
  • Operate electronic surveillance equipment.
  • Gather and maintain evidence.
  • Provide law enforcement training.
  • Extensive travel to include overnight stays will be required; vehicle will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of investigative experience is preferred. An acceptable combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a North Dakota peace officer.
  • Excellent report writing, communication skills, prioritization, time management, and organization skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, all criminal justice agencies, and the public.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Ability to work in an undercover capacity.
  • Ability to be certified as a North Dakota law enforcement instructor.
  • Possess a valid state issued driver's license.
  • Must carry a firearm and maintain firearm proficiency.
