Applications are now being accepted for a Deputy Fire Marshal position in the City of Falls Church Police Department, Office of the Fire Marshal. The purpose of this position is to conduct the daily operations for the Office of the Fire Marshal within the City of Falls Church. The Deputy Fire Marshal will have direct impact on the safety of the community by enforcing Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Codes and the origin and cause investigation of fire incidents.

The position will report to the City Fire Official. This position will be responsible for fire safety inspections of buildings, enforcing the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code and Falls Church City Fire Code ordinances. The Deputy Fire Marshal will also investigate fire safety complaints, assist with plan reviews. The Deputy Fire Marshal will perform fire investigations in a team concept to determine origin and cause. The position’s scheduled work hours are flexible within normal business hours, but may also include special events and call back outside of normal business hours.

Essential Duties/ Typical Tasks:

  • Performing fire inspections and issuing fire permits related to the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code; ensuring compliance with codes and policies and the preparing and maintaining of appropriate records and reports including notices of violation.
  • Responsibility includes interpreting and explaining applicable fire codes and providing technical expertise and information. The Deputy Fire Marshal must exercise considerable tact, courtesy, and firmness in dealing with contractors, property owners and the public. The position may be called to testify in court on code violation cases.
  • Work may also involve performing plan review for conformance to the fire code.
  • Performing cause and origin investigations of fires occurring in the City when requested, be able to document fire scenes and be able to testify in court to those findings.
  • Ensuring that response to citizen concerns regarding violations of fire, explosives and hazardous materials is prompt and mitigated according to the laws, regulations, and codes of the United States, Virginia, and the City of Falls Church and Departmental policy.
  • Providing fire and life safety education to the public and conducting professional presentations.

 

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school and a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the field of fire prevention/investigation/code enforcement or any equivalent combination of training/experience.
  • Candidate must hold a current certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development as a Fire Prevention Inspector
  • A valid certification of NFPA 1031 and NFPA 1033 shall meet the requirements of Virginia Department of Fire Programs
  • Must be in possession of a valid driver's license and provide a copy of current driving record.

 

Additional Desired Qualification:

 

  • Certified as a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) or Fire Investigator Technician (FIT) through the International Association of Arson Investigators.
  • Certified as a Certified Fire and Explosive Investigator (CFEI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators.
  • Certified as a Fire Protection Inspector through the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. These may include additional education with an emphasis in public safety, fire science or related fields. Experience with a background in the fire service with an emphasis of fire prevention/investigation; experience in fire protection systems and maintenance; NICET certified in the field of fire protective systems will be considered.
  • Certificate of Attendance for Environmental Crimes through Virginia Department of Fire Programs
  • Certified as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) through the National Fire Protection Association

 

Supplemental Information:

 

  • Highly Qualified candidate(s) will be given an oral interview, a conditional job offer, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a medical examination, meets OSHA respiratory guidelines for IDLH atmospheres, a final interview with the Chief of Police and Fire Official.
  • This position is eligible for the City’s Basic Pension and Benefits plan.

Hours: This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position. Regular working hours are flexible within normal operating hours of 8:30 AM to 5 PM. Work time may also include special events, and call-backs outside of normal working hours.
