Reports to: Immigration Legal Services Program Manager

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Immigration Case Support: Provide Life-Changing Support for Immigrants

Conduct legal consultations with clients to determine their eligibility for federal immigration benefits.
With support from the Immigration Legal Assistant, complete immigration applications for clients.
Conduct legal research to ensure compliance with immigration laws and regulations.
Represent clients before the Department of Homeland Security.
Review applications with clients to ensure accuracy.
Conduct on-site consultations at Catholic Charities partner sites.
Maintain detailed and timely case records and documentation as mandated by CC-ILS policies and procedures.
Provide internal and external client referrals for supportive services.

Quality Improvement: Help Evaluate the Important Work We Do to Strengthen our Program.

Participate in weekly case discussion meetings with all legal staff and regular individual supervision with Managing Immigration Specialist.
Conduct weekly reviews on peers’ files before documentation is mailed to USCIS.
Conduct open and closed case file reviews as mandated by program policies and procedures.
Collect accurate, complete, and timely data to share with program stakeholders.
Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Community Outreach: Advocate for the Newest Members of our Community

Participate in – or provide – presentations sharing immigration information to immigrant and nonimmigrant communities.
Assist in public relations efforts that increase the visibility of CC-ILS, publicize immigration issues faced by immigrants, and raise community awareness on immigration issues.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Legal Document Preparation: An immigration legal assistant must be proficient in preparing, reviewing, and filing various immigration forms and legal documents, such as petitions, affidavits, and applications. Accuracy is critical to avoid delays or rejections.
Relationship-building: Serving as the first point of contact, an immigration legal assistant needs excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with clients, explaining complex legal processes in an understandable manner. They must also provide emotional support and reassurance, as immigration matters can be highly stressful for clients.
Expertise in Immigration Law: Immigration legal assistants often conduct research on immigration laws, regulations, and policies. They must be able to analyze and interpret this information to assist the team in building strong cases and advising clients accurately.
Team Collaborator: Working closely with your department of ILS is a key part of the role. A legal assistant must be a team player, able to collaborate effectively and contribute to the overall success of the legal team.
Language Proficiency: In many cases, immigration legal assistants work with clients who may have limited English proficiency. Being bilingual or multilingual is a valuable asset that can greatly enhance communication and client trust.

Education and Experience
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
