Organization Summary

The LA Conservation Corps (the Corps) is a private, non-profit organization that has been helping at-risk young people develop themselves since 1986. To date, more than 20,000 young people have participated in the Corps classes and service projects, learning new skills while contributing to the quality of life for all of us in the greater Los Angeles area.

Mission
The primary mission of the LA Conservation Corps is to provide at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Technical Construction Supervisor uses his/her ability to relate, train, and motivate to enable corpsmembers to (A) create stronger ties to their community through community involvement and providing services, (B) explore avenues for personal growth and development in a respectful and nurturing environment, and (C) develop strong leadership skills to contribute to the advancement of all people. The primary responsibility of the Technical Construction Supervisor is to Supervise/ superintend the construction of park, street, and facility improvement, while teaching construction methods and means to young adult corpsmembers.

Essential Functions
  • Develops detailed construction plan and schedule.
  • Monitors the progress of quality of work.
  • Provides oversight of the on-site construction training by ensuring that trainees get consistent and adequate skills training; helping to set standards for appropriate behavior and ways to handle problems on the construction site; and ensuring work-site safety, learning of safety procedures, and proper construction techniques.
  • Ensures quality instruction of construction skills including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, masonry, and equipment operation. Supervises corpsmembers in hands-on work projects that prepare students by providing experience directly related to construction industry occupations and/or construction apprenticeships.
  • Responsible for overall safety enforcement, such as maintaining a safe worksite including, but not limited to safely working around multiple pieces of heavy equipment, overhead mechanical material conveyance, setting up worksites to comply with all appropriate regulations and codes.
  • Assists in personal and vocational counseling and development of trainee's leadership skills in conjunction with other YouthBuild staff.
  • Assists in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction. Participates in the development of project -based curriculum that includes construction.
  • Maintains accurate files documenting the construction projects for each training cycle.
  • Implements and accurately maintains a system to track student's progress and assess their skills and abilities.
  • Supervises, motivates, directs, and coordinates a crew of 10-14 young people in a demanding work/educational program.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of all tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintains discipline and positive crew morale, build teamwork ethic and cooperation among crew members.
  • Enforces the LA Corps' policies and adheres to program goals and philosophy.
  • Responsible for ensuring safe work practices, and proper use and maintenance of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Ensures professional level quality of work, meeting and/or exceeding the requirements set forth in the plans, timelines, specifications and/or applicable codes.
  • Executes plan to meet project deadlines and efficiently utilizes resources such as labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Provides daily project status updates, written corpsmember evaluations, incident reports, and accurate documentation of corpsmember attendance, participation, and work hours. All submissions will be physical or digital.
  • Ensures external professional representation of the LA Corps to community members, government officials, contractors, etc.
  • Ability to read, interpret and analyze blueprints and Construction Documents.
  • Works directly with Program Manager to provide technical guidance and advice associated with any construction documents (esp. when discrepancies are involved); works closely with sponsoring agency project manager or contact and/or County of City inspectors to ensure crews are in technical compliance with deliverables and design elements of projects.
  • Provides 'as-built' drawing for deviations from Construction Documents.
  • Participates in daily, weekly, and monthly meetings as prescribed by supervisor.
  • Punctuality and satisfactory attendance are essential functions of the job.
  • Working from home is not an option.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalency from an accredited institution required; AA and/or bachelor's degree preferred AND at least six (6) months experience working and/or training young people of various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds OR any combination of experience and education that would achieve the desired outcome, as determined by the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Proficiency in using tools/ safety equipment appropriate for various work projects.

Other Requirements
  • Must be COVID-19 vaccinated and be able to provide supporting documentation.
  • Attend events and meetings in the community to support the program. This can involve working Saturdays or Sundays, as needed.
  • California Class C Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement, validation of driving record for commercial policy insurability per the requirements of the state of California. Note: if you do not currently possess a California Commercial Class C Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement, you will have 90 days from the effective date of acquiring the position to secure the Passenger Endorsement.
  • Standard multi-media first aid certification. If you do not currently possess a standard multi-media first aid certification, you will have 90 days from the effective date of acquiring this position to secure it.
  • Pass a post-offer drug/alcohol screen test before commencing employment (required to submit for the drug/alcohol screening at a company designated facility)
  • Pass a post-offer Live Scan (fingerprint/background clearance-Department of Justice) before commencing employment.
  • Reference checks will be conducted. Employment is contingent upon receipt of acceptable references.

Salary and Benefits
  • $28.98 - $36.68/hour (reflects the entire pay range); a starting wage higher than $28.98 per hour is based on a level of experience and education that exceeds the minimum requirements and is commensurate with the compensation scale (salary range).
