Training Resources Group, Inc. (TRG) is an employee-owned consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia. TRG provides organizational effectiveness and learning services for U.S. government agencies, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and private sector/commercial clients. Position Summary:
We are seeking an executive leader with experience and expertise in organizational development (OD) and learning to oversee TRG’s technical portfolio. The Director leads a team of self-motivated, high achieving OD practitioners to identify and pursue new business opportunities, deliver extraordinary client services, and continually advance our technical excellence and learning. The right candidate must be ready to embrace and model our values; build collaborative relationships; lead development and delivery of our technical strategies, approaches, and services; and foster learning and professional development of our technical staff. The Technical Services Director promotes internal shared leadership and other expressions of employee ownership. The Technical Services Director is a full-time position that reports to TRG’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serves on TRG’s Leadership Team (LT). The ideal candidate will be someone local or willing to relocate, as regular in-office presence is required.
Primary Role and Responsibilities:
Technical and Strategic Leadership & Representation
- Demonstrate technical leadership internally
- Lead the development of TRG’s technical strategies and approaches in collaboration with technical staff.
- Participate, as a member of the Leadership Team, in planning, problem-solving, and information-sharing meetings to provide technical leadership and perspectives to the development and implementation of cross-functional company objectives (including organizational health and work/life balance) as well as issues directly related to our technical work with clients.
- Coach and mentor TRGers to develop their technical leadership and representation skills.
- Ensure that there is good collaboration between technical and operations functions to create an extraordinary customer experience for our clients.
- Demonstrate technical leadership externally
- Ensure that TRG has technical representation at key technical events and conferences (e.g., on panels, as speakers, participants) by participating in and/or coordinating the involvement of other technical staff.
- In collaboration with other TRG leadership, develop and maintain partnerships with relevant academic institutions, organizations, and practitioners in our field.
- Meet with key clients and partners to raise TRG’s profile and develop strategic partnerships and relationships.
- As a member of TRG’s Leadership Team, provide input, strategic guidance, and expertise in the overall management of the organization.
- Lead and support corporate change initiatives and leadership activities as needed/assigned.
Research, Development, Innovation and Organizational Learning
- Chair TRG’s Technical Learning Committee and lead the establishment of learning and innovation approaches around core strategic TRG services/topics.
- Connect TRG technical staff with external technical resources, expertise, and knowledge through internal or external panels, seminars, or other learning events.
- Ensure that learning is being captured and leveraged across client systems and projects
- Participate in knowledge management functions and systems to adequately support organizational learning, research, development and innovation.
S taffing, Performance Management, and Professional Development of Technical Staff
- Supervise a team of ODTC Leads with shared responsibility for supportive supervision, performance management, and workforce planning for a team of 25+ technical OD, facilitation, and training staff.
- Supervise Client Services Manager and Chiefs of Party/Project Directors of large, complex TRG projects.
- Ensure that TRG has sufficient technical staff capacity to meet clients’ needs, staff business development opportunities, and address TRG’s internal technical objectives and staff health and well-being.
- Ensure that we are strategically deploying our resources across existing and potential client systems in coordination with the CEO, Project Managers, and others.
- Ensure all Technical Services staff have clear and consistent performance expectations, objectives, and support to succeed in their roles.
- Work with the Technical Services Leadership Team to establish professional development plans, procedures, and support for Technical Services staff.
- Work with technical staff and the Leadership Team to set billability targets that support achievement of the company’s financial and business development goals as well as company objectives related to individual and organizational learning and development, innovation and staff health and well-being.
- Ensure that there is consistency in TRG’s hiring processes for all technical staff, participating in hiring committees as appropriate.
- Coordinate with project managers/COPs and HR to develop position descriptions, recruit and hire new ODTC staff.
- Ensure that systems, processes, and resources are in place to orient all new staff to the technical aspects of our work.
- Ensure that all new technical staff are successfully onboarded, oriented, and integrated into TRG’s work, systems, and culture.
Business Development
- Responsible for identifying, cultivating, and supporting new business opportunities in collaboration with TRG’s CEO and business development team.
- Track and synthesize current trends we are seeing in our technical work to inform business strategy development.
- In collaboration with project managers, COPs, and other technical staff, identify opportunities for new business and liaise with the BD team to pursue promising opportunities.
- Identify and assign staff who can lead and contribute to writing technical proposals and staff TRG can propose to do the work for new business opportunities.
- Coordinate with BD to ensure that our technical work experience is accurately and effectively communicated and marketed to current and prospective clients and partners.
- Provide technical oversight and quality control for key new business opportunities and submissions; serve as proposal champion, lead writer, contributing writer, reviewer, or design contributor as needed.
Engage in TRG’s Corporate Processes:
- Liaise with and provide guidance to CEO on key decisions, as appropriate.
- Liaise with operations functions as needed to ensure extraordinary customer experience and high quality project management.
- Attend staff meetings, retreats, and events as required.
Qualifications, Abilities, and Education Requirements:
- Education - Master’s degree or equivalent education/work experience in a related field (i.e., organizational development, organizational learning, adult education, international development, international or multicultural communication, international business, or management).
- Experience –Minimum of 10 [ten] years of full-time senior technical and/or leadership experience in a well-respected and profitable OD, management consulting, or international development consulting firm.
- Key Skills:
- Demonstrated exceptional OD consulting, communication, and facilitation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and apply technical strategies and approaches that improve. organizational effectiveness.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise self-motivated, highly competent technical staff.
- Ability to lead and manage a large (20+ staff), dynamic workforce.
- Highly skilled in leading and managing change in a collaborative and participatory culture including leading strategy development, strategic and operational planning, strategy implementation, monitoring of progress and performance, and flexibility to adapt, as necessary.
- Ability to foster shared leadership and support employee ownership.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a leadership team.
- Interest and ability in building lasting relationships with clients, partners and colleagues – a natural connector.
- Ability to seek out and apply innovative learning content and OD practices in various contexts.
- Ability to translate technical expertise into business development strategies and proposals.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others in an OD and consulting environment.
- Ability to create enabling conditions for teams to learn and innovate.
- Demonstrated success in business development, preferably with USAID and other international development institutions.
- Proven management experience leading large departments/divisions at successful organizations, including financial management and budgeting.
- Preferred Skills and Experience:
Highly desirable candidates will possess some or all of the following skills and experience:
- Strong writing skills.
- Life and/or work experience in developing countries.
- Familiarity with U.S. government contracting.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
